Deb Calvert Announces Her Candidacy for Minnesota State Senate District 44

Minnetonka, MN – April 28, 2016 – Deb Calvert today filed her candidacy for the State Senate seat in District 44.

“I am running because we need more people in government who have lived through and can relate to the issues facing real people.”

Calvert, a first-time candidate for state office, currently serves on the Minnetonka Planning Commission and works at the Mitchell Hamline School of Law as Executive Assistant to the President and Dean. Prior to her work at Mitchell Hamline, she worked in Senator Amy Klobuchar’s office as her state scheduler.

“I will model my legislative style on Senator Klobuchar and the many other thoughtful public servants from the west metro who put the interests of their constituents above the partisan posturing that has ground civil discourse and effective governance to a halt,” said Calvert.

One of those legislators, State Representative Yvonne Selcer (48A), describes Calvert as a person “with an extraordinary ability to facilitate cooperation and forge consensus.” Selcer continues “I have known Deb Calvert for many years, and know she will work tirelessly to achieve the results we need to move our communities and Minnesota forward.” Calvert, who served with Selcer on the Hopkins School District Legislative Action Coalition, is seeking the seat currently held by retiring Senator Terri Bonoff, another Legislative Action Coalition alumni.

Education will be a top priority for Calvert. “Our children, if they can get that far, are burdened with crushing student debt. It is holding back an entire generation.” She continued “Parents are sandwiched between the needs of their children and the needs of their aging parents. These are real problems that affect real people and need real solutions.”

Another priority for Calvert will be working on legislative policies that foster entrepreneurism and small business growth. A violin teacher by training, Calvert ran her own home business teaching violin as she followed her husband’s emergency services career around the country. Her background in music and love of children also inspired Calvert to co-found the Cadillac String Association, a nonprofit which provides music instruction to an underserved community in Michigan.

Deb Calvert lives in Minnetonka with her husband of 26 years, Valdo, a retired career federal wildland firefighter and emergency manager. They are the parents of two children.
