There are two constitutionally mandated functions of state government – education and transportation. They are also the engines of our economy, so we must keep them strong. Our educated workforce is what attracted and has retained our major employers, and has fostered the entrepreneurship of our small business owners. Our transportation keeps the economy moving. When I sit in traffic on the way to and from work in St. Paul, that is the economy sitting on I-94 along with me. We need a modern, multi-modal transportation system to keep people, goods and services moving.
Policies that improve educational outcomes are fundamental to Minnesota’s economic well-being. We must also promote partnerships between public schools and employers in order to train our students for high-wage and high-demand jobs. That’s why I support Terri Bonoff’s PIPELINE Project, a program that partners businesses with community and technical colleges to ensure that students are learning the skills that local employers need and gives them an automatic pipeline to employment when they graduate.
We are fortunate to have many startups and entrepreneurs in our community. As a former home business owner, I know how important it is that small businesses are given a chance to innovate and thrive. I will work towards policies that foster the growth of both small and large businesses – giving tax breaks and incentives, cutting of unnecessary red tape, and investing in infrastructure and multiple modes of transportation that will keep commerce moving for all Minnesotans.
Education, transportation, infrastructure, job growth and opportunities are all connected. We need leaders who are more concerned with good policy and the needs of our communities than with political point-scoring to accomplish continued economic development and a bright future for our kids. The current gridlock is not acceptable. That is why I ask for your vote to be your next state senator for Minnetonka, Plymouth and Woodland on November 8th.
