FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Deb Calvert Files Her Candidacy for Minnesota State Senate District 44
Minnetonka, MN – May 24, 2016 – Deb Calvert today filed her affidavit of candidacy for State Senate in District 44. Calvert, a first-time candidate for state office, is running for the seat held by retiring DFL Senator Terri Bonoff. “I am running because we need more people in government who have lived through and can relate to the issues facing real people.” Calvert said, in explaining her decision to run.
Calvert is concerned that too many legislative candidates work and live in a partisan echo chamber which keeps them from reaching across the aisle to solve the problems that Minnesotans face everyday. “There is a sense that many of our leaders have little shared experience with us. No sense of shared sacrifice. Political posturing has created an atmosphere of distrust, resentment and alarming polarization. While my political experience helped me win a tough endorsement battle, it is my real-life experience as a parent, former small business owner, and working Minnesotan that will help me to find real solutions for real people.”
Calvert currently serves on the Minnetonka Planning Commission and works at the Mitchell Hamline School of Law as Executive Assistant to the President and Dean. Prior to her work at Mitchell Hamline, she worked in Senator Amy Klobuchar’s office as her state scheduler. “I will model my legislative style after Sen. Klobuchar, who puts the needs of her fellow Minnesotans ahead of partisan politics,” said Calvert.
In addition, Calvert ran her own home business teaching violin as she followed her husband’s emergency services career around the country. Her background in music and love of children also inspired Calvert to co-found the Cadillac String Association, a nonprofit which provides music instruction to an underserved community in Michigan.
Deb Calvert lives in Minnetonka with her husband of 26 years, Valdo, a retired career federal wildland firefighter and emergency manager. They are the parents of two children.
